Dante's Inferno: Hell (1) (The Divine Comedy, 1)
I’m enjoying this more than I thought I would. The poetry is beautiful, and the idea of a human soul being improved by facing and coming to understand the worst sins humanity is capable of is very interesting.

Lovely as usual. Emma is coming to the point where she’ll have to make some big decisions, and I’m interested to see what she’ll choose…

I decided not to finish this one right now. Maybe I’ll come back to it later, it seems fun—but I’ve got a lot of other things demanding my reading time

I’ve read Euthyphro and Apology for my philosophy class so far. Socrates is fascinating.

Lots of history. It’s cool, but takes a bit of extra brainpower to pay attention

The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith
This is good. I hadn’t thought about the parable of the prodigal son this way before. Whether we rebel by going our own way and defying Gods commands or by sticking close to God and trying to please Him so He’ll do what we want, it’s dangerous for our souls.

Wormwood Abbey (The Secrets of Ormdale, #1)
I’m enjoying this audiobook. A gothic abbey in the Yorkshire dales with dragons (at least I assume there are dragons) and a spunky yet flawed authoress? Yes please! I am interested to see where this goes. I hope it will only improve with the ending.

I am trying to understand Marx and Engels’ thinking, but it really doesn’t make sense. There are so many holes. Luckily that’s the point of the book, so I think it’s a problem with their ability to reason and not my ability to understand

This is good. Much more detailed in its realism than other survival stories I’ve read, but good. I think if I had to be stuck at sea, it would be nice to have something beautiful and interesting like a tiger to look at.

So far I’d been enjoying the religious musings, but now there’s some exciting action too!

The Count of Monte Cristo
Back in the thick of it! Monte Cristo is making it clear that he wants to be the very force of justice, dealing out punishment and reward. Presumptuous, but it’s hard to blame him

That Hideous Strength (The Space Trilogy, #3)
This is really good. CS Lewis mixes real world things with fantasy and sci-fi very well, I would say. Merlin the wizard, re-animated corpses, and well trained pet bears feature in this fascinating book.

Letters to Malcom: Chiefly on Prayer
Great insights on prayer. I like his thought on how when we try to be completely spontaneous in our prayers we still end up falling into patterns, and when we use pre-written prayers we can still infuse our personal concerns and intentions into the words.

This is really good! CS Lewis is showing the inner ring play out within the professional life of people working at a college. He’s incredibly insightful about how we as humans justify ourselves.

The Sovereignty of Good
I’m reading this for the BYU-I philosophy department’s reading group. It’s been really interesting. I like her idea that appreciating art is a step toward morality because it brings us out of ourselves and invites us to see things as they really are. At least, great art does that for those able to appreciate it.
