This is proving to be very slow going… which is odd because I LOVED all the Murderbot stuff and I am more of a fantasy girly than a sci-fi one. Still, this isn’t really clicking for me?

After an extremely long and dragging start - this book is actually picking up! It only took me a year to get to 28%…

So far I’m loving how nervous and scatty Toadling is… I just hope it doesn’t get old soon.

I really like how both main characters actually have a believable (and not cliched!) set of positive and negative traits. She’s funny and actually intelligent, but also very naive and a bit childish. He’s kind, but also kinda dull and entitled (but that’s literally the way he’s been brought up to be) and oblivious to the power imbalance. Overall, Sophie Irwin doesn’t miss her mark!

So far the premise of the book is interesting, but I have one problem with it: I HATE feeling second hand embarrassment. Like, in movies and series I even fast-forward embarrassing scenes cause I just can’t take it. And this book so far… is pretty much the epitome of ‘embarrassing yourself’ on purpose. We’ll see if I can get through it.

I’m really liking the vibe of this book even if both its two main pov characters are so fucking annoying.

The reason why Gav looks like a strange spren in the visions is because he is a spren! How do we know he was the real Gav when he was saved from Kohlinar? We don’t. He’s a spren who perhaps thinks he’s Gav.

Some of this is bordering into AO3 Stormlight fanfic - and I’m not mad about it.

I’m really trying to pace myself here and not let my life be completely absorbed by Stormlight 😅

After the 50% mark this is getting a bit weaker unfortunately… it feels almost like fanfic of the first half?

This is very good. I devoured 50% of the book last night. I’m going to make a prediction, which is spoilery so read at your own peril.

I think Rafe is a prince because he’s the half brother of Skya and Emilie!

Not gonna lie, I’m most likely DNFfing for now because this reads like a boring Jack Frost fanfic for twelve year olds.

Completely and utterly hooked on Maia’s journey as Emperor. This guy. He is the sweetest and most precious coming-of-age protagonist I’ve ever read. Not once I’ve felt impatient with him. Or put off by his stupidity. And his circle of friends (although an emperor has no friends)? I care about every single one. If any of them betrayed him I would be heartbroken.

I’ve only just started and I can tell this is a classy book. One of those instances when you can instantly recognise there is craft behind the page. What a relief. I’m so tired of truly badly written prose.

Yes yes yes! After months of plotless books and annoying characters, I’ve finally found someone who can write fairies in an interesting way! Olivia Atwater does it again! After the Regency romantic fairytales, here come the spooky Victorian vibe for the gothic girlies 🖤
