Though I'm sure it would have been received well when it was published 60 years ago, Hexter's summary of the "Judeo" portion of the tradition - which covers the mythological origins of the Jews to ~134 BCE with the conclusion of the Maccabean Revolt - is a bit out of date with current scholarship and convention. Really, the first half of this book would serve only newcomers to the religion without care for nuances.

Every time I read this, I'm shocked all over at how coincidental the entire book is and how the protagonists have next to no driving force outside of happening to be in the right place at the right (or wrong) moment. Can't finish this quickly enough.
