I'm feeling conflicted about this book. I like the issues that it is talking about with both society and the publishing industry but I feel like as a satire it is not effective as it could be. June is supposed to be a disliked character and she is constructed well to be despised but part of her characterization is constantly punching down and being prejudiced while Kuang is being critical of problematic instructions.

“If you can make strangers look like enemies and enemies look like monsters, you can justify any form of abuse—and make people pay for their own oppression” (4).

I totally switched editions just so y’all know I’m reading the version with the prettiest cover 🫣
