I had to give up again. Maybe the third time will be the charm, someday? I just couldn’t bear the characters or the family dynamics — too close to home.

Wish I could add photos! I’d share some of the amazing shading techniques this artist uses to create mood and atmosphere.

This is great. My first time reading Solnit. I enjoy her dreamy yet scientific and historical reveries. Like following some kind of a throughline in a library across different aisles, both nonfiction and fiction.

I’ve read the chapter on mastering basic sauerkraut and am now skipping around, flipping between recipes. What an inspiring book! I can’t wait to try so many of these recipes! It is also just so well-done — easy to read, well-designed, with photos and illustrations, and funny.

When it comes to class satire I much prefer Gogol, or Austen. Character development? No question — Dostoyevsky. Not sure if I’m going to continue with this showy classic. I do enjoy the historical descriptions though. We’ll see.

No plot… reads like a journal. And the author doesn’t seem to know what “silence” means. Why am I reading this?

I love Tig but this is just too depressing for me right now. Returning it to the library early.

Excellent so far. On a personal note — this would’ve been triggering as hell only a few years ago. The writer nails the walking-on-eggshells-to-keep-danger-at-bay feeling, and the slow buildup of layers that is domestic violence.

I almost stopped reading this book many times during the first two chapters because some aspects of the protagonist (B.) repulsed/offended me, but instead pushed on, sensing there was more to it than I could appreciate yet... and there is!

Also — for fans of the podcasts Heavyweight and Wiretap, B. is similar to Jonathan Goldstein, so it’s like listening to a very long JG story. I’m enjoying it.

The story "Sonny's Blues" knocked me out. I'm taking a break just to fully absorb that story before continuing to the next.
