Treadmill audiobook - writing is just as obnoxious as I remember and knowing that the girl narrator dies at the end to deepen the male narrator’s perspective on life, and that it will definitely be revealed that his mean childhood prank where he stood her up for the dance was actually orchestrated by her mean girl friends, the internalized misogyny is running rampant. Men can do no wrong!

Someday I’ll return to a physical copy of this but the audiobook is not working for me :/ apologies to the author but she should’ve had someone else narrate

Confused if I'm just really out of it or if this is truly just one of the most disjointed books I've ever read

My favvvvvv favorite as a kid. It’s still super overwritten but the jump in quality and richness of story is ridiculous

Again this series covered much darker topics than I remembered (I remembered that this book was about a hateful plantation daughter who died in the uprising but the first book's ghost was a mother wrongfully executed for her sons' murders and the male lead's biggest regret is not being able to help a classmate who was facing bullying that drove her to suicide)

Really interesting take on the nature of memory (compared to other body-swap stories A is able to access a lot of memories of the people they inhabit) and a really beautifully empathetic text. I understand Rhiannon but am not the biggest fan of her as a love interest, but I'm willing to be proven wrong

In kidlit crit last semester we talked about "ideology" as the values an author believes to be unspoken, universal truths that shine through in their work. Given how Em constantly references magazines she was "totally just skimming through" and had 3 love interests, the ideology here is that all girls secretly want to be pretty girly girls loved by boys. Which isn't framed as a bad thing, but a doozy so far

The datedness is charming bc it really makes you feel how similar girlhood has been across time. Margaret has this thing where she’s really proud of how well she can raise her right eyebrow so she’s constantly doing it in conversation and noting how people react

Another book I loved in middle school. Aw cute throwback. Not feeling a lot of nuance in the world around them but the protagonists are cute.

"Usually I'm entertained by stories about Mr. Owens —and Lydia has a lot of them-but Cole is now laughing at something Trista said. I wish Trista wasn't so pretty. I wish somebody would go over there and remind Cole that prettiness isn't everything, and that girls who are quirky and smart and appreciate good music are ultimately far more appealing." What did we call this kind of behavior before "pick me"?

This is sooooo fun because I don't know all the bands that well. A new name will appear in the narration talking about how they always wanted to form a band and I'll be like omg who's it gonna be

It’s still really interesting and the romance/spice is nicely paced. I’ve never read a romance book that isn’t about autism but has an autistic MC - it’s treated very meaningfully in her arc so it’s nice!
