So excited for this one! One of my favorite writers.

DNF @ 40%. I just can't. I hate it.

Unfortunately not understanding the hype around this one so far. Really hope it turns around...

IT’S TIME!!!! 👏🏾🥹❤️ Typically prefer to go in with no expectations but I’ll admit the expectations are on 1000% for this one 😳

DNF @25%. Too corny and eye-roll worthy for me.

DNF @ 40%. This book has 0 substance or storyline.

Twelve pages in and I’m already pulled back in to Celeste Ng’s prose. There’s nothing quite like it. So beautiful…

Loving this re-read! Falling in love with Serpent & Dove book all over again. But reliving how amazing the first one was confirms that this definitely should’ve been a standalone and not a series!

Three thoughts so far:

1. This book is doing wayyyy too much. The writing and dialogue are trying too hard to be hip, so it just ends up being over-saturated and corny.

2. The similarities to the Netflix show "Dear White People" are so glaring that I don't know how this author has not been sued yet.

3. I sort of hate it but I am begrudgingly invested enough in the romance that I'm going to keep reading.

LOVING this book so far. The daughter Briar is freaking adorable and the book overall is incredibly entertaining and well-written.

Redemption in progress! I'm now eating up every (still slightly overwritten) line. Can't wait to see how she closes it...

The grand irony that this book is set in an MFA program and reads exactly like a working draft of an MFA workshop is not lost on me. It’s overwritten to the point of obnoxious. Her writing strives to be grandiose but just ends up being a bunch of run-on sentences. But alas, it’s still early on, so I’m hoping it will redeem itself. 🙄

I gotta confess... I'm only still reading this just to say I read it. Apart from a few moments of illumination, I've been underwhelmed... Touting a book as "for fans of Anthony Marra's A Constellation of Vital Phenomena" - a personal favorite - was a lofty tag line, and I fell for it hook, line and sinker. The author is immensely talented though. I just don't anticipate this one being for me.

Incredible so far! I'm floored at how brilliant she is...

This book is just what I neeeed! A true escape from reality. I've never read "historical fantasy" before, but I'm hooked.
