This is too funny. I love a good mysterious ironic weird and wonderful societal commentary type comedy

I like the exploration of the dynamic of the sisters torn apart by a toxic father, thats well explored. But the individual sisters as characters are rather meh. The writing is scenic and I like the setting so still enjoying the read overall.

The case of second being better because world is established. Intrigue. Betrayal and politics getting cooler and more heated. I like Elena's true hardship.

This Jaya seemed intriguing.

This journey has been nuts. Read 100 pages, dropped it. Picked it up about a month ago after a year. It sometimes was forced through intermittently between other books. But I find myself into it now. I normally despise forcing myself through books. But this has so many gems and is intentionally repetitve and chaotic. Still might take it slow but I'm surprised how much I'm feeling a flow with it.

Zooming through this audiobook and doing semi-necessary errands instead of priority tasks so I can still feel productive. Similar Hail Mary that I read last month, but somehow still unique.

Thank you John Green for persuading me to pick up Emily Dickinson. I love. A girlie who vibes with death? Yes. A great mini handbag book to move me on the bus when my outfit does not suit a big bag for my bigger read.

After the first few poems I'm not blown away but I really like a good few lines so curious to see what this brings.

Dropped this in Jan 2025. Not because I didn't like its contents but because its repetetive and chaotic (its supposed to be). And I was reading it too much like a traditional novel. Now I've picked this up again and I think I'll read it more like I read poetry, a bit slower over weeks or months so as not to overload myself and best appreciate it.

Oh my god this books keeps getting more and more insane and complicated and I'm so shook at the circumstances and the strange overlaps of worlds and the incredible writing. One of the best sex scenes, the bits on blindness and hate and guilt. Just a lot aaaahhh oh my god wtf

Yeah so I dropped this a few months ago around page 70. Then I re-picked it up now to find that the big thing (at least I think) happens around page 100 haha. I'm going to keep reading in the hopes that the 100 page wait is worth it. I get a set up is needed but it seems like a long wait. Or maybe I'm just impatient. I'm sure this is famous for a reason so lets see!

Yeah this is still wild. Still riveting. I think part of me wonders at certain points in the book why there is so much left but then it shows me there is still more to say and its not going to get boring.

Most of what I have read so far is introduction and translators notes but I must say I'm already so intrigued. I knew nothing of Lemebal, but saw the book multiple times on shelves and was constantly intrigued due to an interest in S. America and queer history. Already learning a lot. Already fucking with their dense confrontational beautiful writing.

Took me a while to feel with the characters but now I do. Almost felt tears in Tesco today listening to Aruma sad about saying I love you to his aunt, about Taukiri not coming back.

Side note, these Maori names (?) are beautiful.

This is better than the last! Love love love a sequel that is better.
The portrayals of Lauren where we're encouraged to criticise her more. The classic yet infinitely interesting larger than life figure fucking up parenthood, the Marcus Arc, the development of acorn once established is far interesting to me than it's initial conception. Enjoying a lot.

Yeah so safe to say I love the book (audio is bonus). Queer Chicago hit man is my baby i love him. Interesting how the depictions of griselda blanco vary so much. But yeah the after bit is also really interesting. I think some people get a bit jarred with the bit time skip but i think it's still interesting and relevant to themes. Even the first part was never about the singer anyway.

Again I don't think we need this many damn reminders what year it is lol.
There were one or two times I thought the speech or inner dialogue was unrealistic. But then I realised that A) obviously inner dialogue in a book will sound better than real life that's why we fucking read. B) Something about many Africans and Carribean people genuinely have a poetry to their words that seeks unrealistic to the west.

I'm loving this book. The audiobook has various voices. I love the patois, the big cast, the problematic people, the ones who fit modern sensibility. I love how much I'm learning.
Only mild annoyance so far is how many times they're telling me the year or how many times they will say how wild Kingston is or how harrowing the ghetto is. Not that it isn't, but The events make it plenty obvious.

Intense, sad and emotive opening. Really cool story telling with the different characters and how their scenarios, all connecting to 'The Singer', cover politics (local and international), gang violence and so more. I love the concept. Sometimes it's ambitious but here it seems there is still character depth
