ive had this book since high school, and ive flipped to a random page and read bits whenever i feel like shit
im reading this book the whole way through now but i expect to carry this or some other book like it for a while after

Chapters 1-7
1-4? i read a year ago ish, reread of course
extremely finely tuned book so far, though women are portrayed as unknowable creatures in stoner's wife, finch

it rolls well with the rest of the seamless prose, but the eccentricities of finch feels like a rupture from the detached, sometimes gentle and sympathetic, forbearing narration that runs through this book

the congress, the sect of thirty, the night of the gifts, the mirror and the bask, undr, a weary man's utopia (again), the bribe, avelino arredondo
the disk (again), the book of sand (again)

finished the 'book of sand', only 'shakephere's memory', a short volume with borges's last 4 stories, remain

there are more things

these 4 short stories ive read prior to starting this book, so ill log them first

i'll probably not start this book until next year, and ill reread these stories again then

(this book is brodie's report + in praise of darkness, which is a very short short story collection and something i finished earlier this year)

reading for an exam, its pretty good but i'm also sleep deprived as fuck so my judgements may be tainted

An animal leaps out from each paragraph and conversation Bolaño writes here, but I don't see it. I know its there however and it makes me a little uneasy.

Skin, Phaedra's Love

strawberry, the flower hat, moon, cars, companions, clock, the dragon flute
reread the titular story

dragon flute/true love at dawn/from the wilderness/voices of the fallen heroes
the rest of the stories i'm less interested in and ill come back to later on

fallen heroes feels like mystic ultranationalism's answer to critical theory and i kinda love it-- some of the imagery and world building was beautiful and mishima's own self awareness and nihilism makes this not feel like i'm rotting my brain
