I’ve made pretty good progress this week, it’s beginning to follow a more traditional narrative structure which has helped me to create the links necessary to fully appreciate such a complex work. I was however very disappointed to hear Bergotte did not live up to his expectations but that’s why they say never meet your heroes I suppose

Whilst undeniably very slow and meandering, I’m finding this semi-autobiography of proust’s life to be very well written. He does like to go on tangents though, 2/5s have been about his grandfather’s friend getting messed around by the busiest bisexual in France. Fortunately I do now see how this ties in to the greater story and I look forward to seeing how this shapes his future.

Gotta read the book to make sure I can be an accurate hater when I watch the film

Roughly 30% in now and it’s a little slow but I’m still very invested so I think I’m gonna keep at it. Guess you can’t rush greatness

This is drastically more plot based than the light fantastic, but also less sound effects in the audiobook 😔

Don’t think I really understand any of the subtext or the secondary plotline but it’s a very well nicely formatted book. Kinda like XX with the way it plays around with font, colour and direction

Definitely glad I read ‘bored gay werewolf’ before because this is pretty much a direct sequel, going well so far though. Set in London which is banger, although they describe someone as a UKIP voter which is a little unrealistic for a book published this year and set in the present day. Clearly the yanks aren’t keeping up to date with UK political party changes

This is nothing like Brave New World or Island I can tell you that. It’s much more in conversation with itself which I guess he needs to do when writing more nuanced mixtopian novels

Going well so far, I think I might be the first person to read this on Goodreads 💪 to be fair I don’t think it comes out for 5 months so I’m kinda cheating

I feel like the more I read this the less certain I am that I ever read the previous five books… I can’t remember any of the past references they mentioned :(

I’d all like to amend my review for ‘a separate war’ to 4/5 as it’s come to me that it felt so familiar because it followed what the love interest from ‘the forever war’ was doing in the times they were apart, mirroring that novel, so of course it would feel similar and have the same plot. In my defence i read the original many years ago so it’s hard to remember names.

Diminished chord: 3/5 a fun story about a love lute but not very fleshed out
Giza: 4/5 interesting concept of how we would treat the people we engineer to go to space
Foreclosure: 2/5 aliens want to foreclose on earth, not very exciting concept

Finished a separate war, it was good but unfortunately too similar to the forever war to stand out for me. 3/5

I fear I am not destined to finish this, one year in so far but I’m trying my best
