It's an American classic for a reason. I have no idea why I hadn't read it earlier in my life, but after a recommendation from Douglas Kennedy I definitely had to read it. Well written, but ultimately somewhat disappointing. Maybe if I had read many "boy loved girl, boy lost girl, boy pines forever for lost girl" before, it may have been more powerful.
