Vol 2 isn't on goodreads yet so I'll be logging both of them together

Isles of the Emberdark is openly a continuation of the story started in Sixth Of The Dusk (no worries if you haven't read it; it's enfolded into Isles). Quietly, it's a direct continuation of Tress of the Emerald Sea, although I'd be shocked if we see the titular character.

Halfway through Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. A surprising amount of death on all sides, but nothing too painful yet. Wish me luck.

The "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" reference threw me for a loop. That book was like a fever dream; I was obsessed with it and no one ever knew what I was talking about. I have been vindicated.

Got delayed by the holidays but finally making some progress here

Day one progress. What a chunky book

'be our shelter, be our home, be loved' ... Liu had heard me. Very faintly I heard her voice, thready and fragile, calling it back to me.

I fully picked this up in person at a used bookstore just because the cover was shiny, so let's see how this goes!

I'm really not enjoying this book, but there's only 150 pages left so it doesn't feel like it's worth DNFing. Hopefully the last half of the book wows me, but this has been a really disappointing read so far.

Time for a reread, baby! I know I literally read this in November, but after reading the Inheritance Cycle, I wanted more dragons and the recent read kept popping up as the easiest outlet. Here we are, again!

This is GROSS. You do NOT understand the way that language deprivation affects Deaf - and especially DeafBlind - people. This is not the same. You should know better.

I'm also a little uncomfortable with using Hellen Keller as a touchstone for people to describe their trauma healing by comparing it to Keller understanding the concept of water being paired with a sign or word. Deaf people aren't tools to reduce down into inspirational statements.

I need books focused on mental health to NOT use racial slurs multiple times in rapid succession. Inuit people can experience trauma too and deserve to be able to access resources without slurs in them. "Kayak roll" would have done just fine.

Today's chunk done. I wouldn't consider this a revolutionary text on trauma work but if someone hasn't read books on ptsd/cptsd before, it's a fine foundational text. It's not heavy, is written simply, and is easily digestible.

I keep picking up Deaf historical fiction for... obvious reasons but then getting annoyed because I don't like historical fiction uggh. Is there Deaf fantasy? Deaf romance? Can I get Deaf identity and sign language in fiction without it being historical fiction? Please send help! There's absolutely nothing wrong with this book! And also, I'm not enjoying myself as much as I'd like. :(
