Anybody else find the first few chapters a bit slow ?

Very readable/accessible. Simplistic in its style, yet so distinct in its characterisation, really getting into this one. Am looking up Tevis’s other novels

Enjoying it but disappointed with the americanised-feel to it. I doubt country kids in Australia in the 60s were that much on to pop culture, such as Audrey Hepburn films and the batman vs super man debate and books like Catcher In the Rye.

Writing prosaic and formulaic. Keep hoping it gets better. Characters one-dimensional and unrealistic.

She seems quite detached from her family and the things that happened to her. Almost like she’s viewing it through another’s eyes. It lacks warmth.

So far a bit trite but might find some helpful suggestions

Lawrence writes brilliantly about the complexity of human desire.

This book is really silly but I did grab a few tips from it. I aim to apply the 5am plan to my mornings for a few months to see how it can improve my work life

So far what you’d expect from Zimmer Bradley in the Mists of Avalon series -66 pages and nothing has happened, just a lot of characters talking about Druid rites.

Fun story but some of the writing is shamefully bad. Also think some of the names could have done with some work- “Trollocs” sounds silly, and Aes Sedai and “draghkar” sound contrived. Obviously Tolkien-inspired.

I am not sure why I initially rated this one with 4 stars. Re-reading it now after several years and it really is a chore.

Now I understand why RHCP’s lyrics are so awful. Kiedis has lived such a shallow and soulless life. Pretty much sums up the entire band and all of their output.

Goldman clearly hates John Lennon. Character assassination in the extreme. I want to finish reading to see if it redeems itself but it’s such a depressing read. Yoko and John are painted as absolute assholes

Bradley may not be the best writer but she evokes the pagan spirit and rites of ancient Briton beautifully, in such a powerful yet simple, winding prose.

Up to Chapter 4 of the Vintage 1996 edition. I’ve had this yellowed paperback in my collection for over 10 years and only just now reading it for the first time. From the first line I was fixated. But it’s mysterious- who is The Commander? Why are the women sleeping in a gymnasium and all made to wear red?

The Bacchae is brilliant.
