There are about 1400 characters in this book, all with similar WASPy names and traits, and five chapters in, I can’t tell if I should care about any of them, or who is who, despite the cast list at the beginning. One talking dog does not a gripping tale make. Holding out for the cat.

4 pages in to the prologue and I'm already fascinated

I'm more than halfway through this book, 437 pages in, and I'm still not entirely sure what it is about. But it is as engrossing as it is sprawling, so I press on, hoping that something will come to light.
