Ah yes, when you’ve reached the point of fanbase legend when people start selling meme shirts on Etsy about your fic, beautiful. Nowadays this is art on tumblr that might end up on Redbubble, but still. Also surprising that Rainbow had a pseudonym for most other sites used, but not Etsy, hmm. (8/?)

It’s really cool to see what the most popular theories are and what people think will happen, and looking back after the last of the series has released. Or even if the show goes on hiatus or the like, it leaves fans to interpret what we’ve been given so far. Such a beautiful thing. (7/?)

It’s so cool to see an author that clearly has been influenced by fandom, to write a book surrounding it. Additionally, I’ve also experienced the “fic before the end”, that last ditch effort by the fans to tell what they think the ending of the series will be through fanworks like fics and comics. (6/?)

Additionally, and I can’t find it now but Cath mentions that she’s a kind of first named fan within the “Simon Snow” fanbase. Which again, is a very real concept that fandoms have. Every single one I’ve been in have these sort of “fans that have fans” within them. AJR has them, the Hellaverse has tons of them, I could go on. (5/?)

This book depicts fan spaces how they actually are, sometimes full of critics and lovers alike. It mentions how Cath’s fic has been getting great reviews but that some fans have turned against her for her characterization being incorrect. This is exactly something a fanbase would do for a very popular fic. (4/?)

Firstly, this page brings up how another fansite, titled “Fic-sation”, posted about Cath’s fic and then it got a lotttt of hits. Typically, I don’t see a whole lot of this in the “modern” era of 2026. Although, I was just reading a fanfic, which is one of the top in the fan base by kudos and hits, the other day and it linked an article discussing the fic, with an interview with the fic’s author, in the notes. Ok so I really want to talk about pages 48 and 49, so that’s what we’re gonna do. To start with a general statement, this book is both a product of its time and a love letter to classic fandom culture; Fandom culture I sadly did not get to experience firsthand, but I’ve heard the legends. (1/?)

The only things changed are the tense and the “writers voice” for lack of a better word. Also the word “git” was exchanged for “wanker”, former being “Simon Snow” and the latter being Carry On. Even though the words in between the dialogue changed, their sentiment stayed the same. I’d say that Rainbow, like I said above, looked back at these excerpts when writing Carry On. (2/2)

I was reading this excerpt from “Simon Snow” the second book and it sounded really familiar, too familiar. So, I went digging into Carry On, as one does, and found.almost word for word, this exact scene. The only things changed are the first few lines from Fangirl were left out of Carry On proper, but almost all the dialogue is identical. (1/2?)

Spoiler alert: the scene is fundamentally different in both Fangirl and Carry On, but they share the same basic structure of Penelope meeting Simon, and helping him with a lesson in class. They actually use almost the same verbiage to describe Penny, describing her pointy spectacles as those you would wear if going to a “fancy dress party” as a witch. Quite interesting that Rainbow used the same comparison twice.

I really would like to comment on all of these, in between chapter Simon Snow moments, but alas, I don’t have the time. In any case, I wonder if this one, from the fictional first “Simon Snow” book, is similar to the scene Simon recalls in one of the first few chapters of Carry On.

I’ve forgotten how accurate this book is to the first few experiences I had in college. Although, I believe I read this book in high school, and may not have revisited it after my first year of college, but I’m unsure. Either way it is interesting to see how a character so different from myself would interact with virtually the same stimulus.

So, apparently the ward to keep girls out of the boys dorms in Carry On doesn’t exist in the first fictional “Simon Snow” book, interesting.

Omg “commemorative busts of Simon and Baz”, if only our irl Carry On had this much merch. Although hopefully I’m about to get my hands on some of my own official merch :)

Rereading this book cause I haven’t in sooo long. Honestly this may only be my 3rd ish time reading this book, which is wild. Reading the anniversary edition, meaning there’s some cool extra goodies in here (I think just the letter at the beginning and the discussion at the end but still). Either way, very excited to read (and honestly I’d like to annotate at some point but we’ll see.

Queer people being out and not having to directly say that to the reader is great. Not sure if I’m getting my point across or not, but you get it. Anyway, great read, perfect for fall and Halloween. Welp, onto scattered showers :)

Just read this in one sitting and I gotta say it’s really cute. Fun to see all of adventures Deja and Josiah go on within the book. The world really feels connected and the characters feel real, like they’ve been working at the patch for years. I really like that Josie kinda comes to his senses at the end and realizes who he really wants. Also the subtle queer rep with Deja is well done and I love to see it. (1/?)

Just picked up this one from the library (with some others) and I cant wait to start reading

I believe my next steps now, after re-reading the whole main series, is to re-read "Snow for Christmas" within Scattered Showers and finally read the promotional fanfic zine, released as a Bookworm Omaha preorder incentive for Scattered Showers (as I've never read it before). Anyway, I'll update Scattered Showers when that happens :)

I felt that there were some iconic scenes that were left out initially, therefore, the additional annotation. Anyhow, a great read as always (and omg I cried at the end of Lucy's last chapter (ch 84), its so unbelievably sad and sweet at the same time. (2/?)

Finished the re-read and, surprisingly, I forgot about a few scenes. I forgot about the Simon and Baz confrontation in the catacombs flashback (ch 17). Additionally, I forgot about Baz and Agatha's short convo post Simon breakup (ch 37). Additionally I added more annotations and sticky tabs then were there previously. Although, they're not color coded this time. (1/2)

Not just because I headcannoned Agatha as aroace, but mostly because the romance didn’t have enough time to feel real; it feels a bit forced. This isn’t the case for Shep and Penny, cause they had a chance to get to know each other in “Wayward Son”. Anyway, fantastic read as always, now to go read carry on again (2/2)

So did I skip class just to read this book for the idek how many times, yes. Was it worth it, also yes.
I’ve changed my opinion on it considerably. I always thought it was good but now the only issue I’m still hung up on is Agatha and Niamh’s relationship, it keeps falling flat for me. (1/?)
