I really wish this was a bit better.

Okay. I am not sure I can finish this. The only thing keeping me going is a desire to write a comparison between this and some of the really good medieval historical fiction I've read year. (The Matrix, The Evening and the Morning).

I'm finding this a little disappointing. Its much more YA than exexpected. The active plot makes for easy and engaging reading, but I find myself snapped out of the 5th century setting every few pages either by historical details I find unlikely or by very heavy handed statements reminding us that the author is a 21st century feminist.

I like the characters and the story is engaging enough for me to keep going.

So far, my only complaint is the word "Uniquely" in the subtitle.

While this is a thoroughly enjoyable travel read, I take issue with the fact that residents of a tiny town in the mountains of Northwest Washington state haven't had a single interaction with or even sighting of a bear in over 4 years.... and that I seem to know the characteristics of a bear mauling better than the police and doctor of said town.
Still a fun read.

A blurb on the back promised "Twin Peaks meets Fargo"....
We shall see.

Any fan of S.K. or existentislism should get a copy of this.

Only a chapter in, but this is very promising. Unfortunately I am finding the authors' narration in the audiobook rather grating. She's got good intonation, but very harsh s's. I might cave and get the hard copy.

A cozy fall read. Not.

"I can admit to you now that, in the fog of day-to-day living, I sometimes forgot that there was so much we were missing from those first three years of your life. At times it seemed an amount impossible to measure, all the secrets you could never explain to us."

Fascinating. Troubling. Entertaining.

Slowly listening to this on Audible. I feel like I'm back in an English class as Saunders walks me through these wonderful stories.
