Froma time when I was obsessed with all about the Vikings - a bit like when I had a huge fan crush on Cameron Daddo after watching him on the kids tb show! Fascinating But a book I dipped in and out of as I’m not great reading non fiction in huge chunks.

Another piece of Australian fiction which kept me hooked. I could see this as a movie with parts maki g me think of the US series I think it was called Carnival, creepy stuff. Again images in Australia somewhat downtrodden but The twist I didn’t see coming until it was on me. Another sad family story where one moment changes the lives of so manny.

I am not particularly patriotic as I don’t read the largest amount of Australian fiction but this past month I’ve read a number. This book started to sweet and full of promise and while it ends with hope it’s a study in how we, as parents, we can fuck up our kids lives with our own flaws. Very sad to see the impact of hdhood trauma and how they carry it
With them through their lives.

Loved the sagas but also the sociology and anthropology - want to know more

My favourite style of both. No complicated plot twists but a character study. More left unsaid than spelt out. Such a rich story in so few words.

I enjoyed but didn't love this book. Not all the characters were very likeable but the pace and style of writing I really enjoyed.

From now on, she understood, she'd be chained to the pay phone, ringing her beloved at his mother's, or his wife's. To them she'd be known as that woman - the last in a series of female voices who had called the same numbers, looking for the same thing. Her beloved was insensitive and crude - everything was clear in his case. There was nothing but pain in store for her, yet she cried with happiness and dn't stop.

Sorry, I gave up on this one, just did not engage me.

I love, Haruki, I have made no secret of that, but I'm pleased I borrowed this from the library and didn't buy it. More of an idea for a story, clearly Haruki can get anything published. This was a great idea, but not a great book.

I have to confess I'm putting this one aside for now. An incredible artist whose work I'm fascinated by, but I just don't enjoy non fiction. Sorry Hayden.

I am savouring every word of these stories - they are incredible. This is what writing is all about for me, this is would I dream I would create if only I could. The writing is somewhat sparse but the story that is conveyed in such a short time - INCREDIBLE. "Skin" was only a page and a half long and the story contained within those words extended so far beyond what was written. I have one story left and then am

I'm loving this book. I came across The Tenderness of Wolves on recommendation. There is something in the tone of the main character or Ray that is familiar to me from her other book, which is fine. I'm gripped.

Havent needed a dictionary to hand whilst reading for a while! Not into it yet - Geoff said he gave up on his attempt at Cheever as it was boring. I'll persist but read alongside something else for commutes!

Anything set in a "Snow Falling on Cedars" type setting tugs on my heart strings from the get go. The structure of the book is very interesting, but at times keeps you at a distance from the characters.

The second book ella chose for me, let's see how it is.

I'm breathless. I've just finished chapter 38 and sobbed for 10 minutes straight. Just over two years ago my family and I sat with my darling brother when he was at the end of his very short but aggressive fight with cancer. In this book a character passes and it is told so vividly, so accurately it took my breath away. This is a truly amazing piece of writing that will stay with me forever.

I simply cannot get enough of Kent Haruf's writing. The stories are not big, the themes are those of life, love, loss, birth, but not in a loud way, but a quiet, unassuming manner he writes of them. They have all been set in towns where everyone knows each other and their business, but where there is support and compassion. Love, LOVE his work and Benediction is no exception.

Enjoying this read although I confess that I'm finding some of the Dutch characters names confusing as there isn't a lot of character description, physically.

I'm really enjoying this book, but will say that now it puts me in mind of Forest Gump. The main character finding himself in improbable situations with historical figures.

As soon as we got to the abandoned rail station the tone, as well as the setting, put me very much in mind of the 2003 movie with Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent). Also reminds me of a station we spent time standing around on in northern Norway, it too surrounded by forest.

A big spilled milk fan, love Matthew humour. Planning a trip with our two daughters, I couldn't be more excited about this book and Matthews insights. I find it a very exciting option to lonely planet!

Death has been more of a presence in our lives over the past few years, so reading about it is of particular interest to me. It's sad, but fascinating at the same time. The surrender of loss confusing. Not fiction, part memoir part reference - stories of the worst times for some amazing people.

Troy lent me this book, so I'm interested to start it.

Not a library book, not an e book, but the utter delight of laying cash on the counter and taking home a pristine book, with its lovely paper ink smell, snuggling up in bed and opening to page 1.

Loving this book, the book references are fantastic and the supporting story equally so.
