Hard hitting. Bitter and uncompromising. The lack of historical accuracy of some aspects of the narrative (e.g. the old canard about the Brits cutting off the thumbs of Indian weavers) in no way diminishes the emotional impact of the author-character's feelings about being in "the West". It answers the too familiar charge of "if you hate it here why did you come here?"
