Just read description of Natasha meeting Anatole at the opera and falling deeply under his spell only to have Tolstoy rip his character to shreds in the next passage. You know there is no way out for Natasha - if she rejects him and marries Andrei the marriage will be forever tainted as she will question herself constantly. If she does not, her heart will be broken into 1000 pieces.
