Y'know, some writers in the past were paid by the sentence, or the word, which influenced their style to be more effusive, more verbose, mainly to pump up that count, and with it, their salary.
I've an idea forming that Ms. O'Farrell was perhaps being paid by the adjective, or even the simile. Because why does everything feel, taste, look, and smell like four other, different things?
