It is interesting to see parallels between Irving's novels. War, institutions, strange family dynamics, important objects, sex, maine, vienna; they keep coming back throughout.
In that way, this is just like other Irving's I've read- the main difference up until this point is the pacing. In Cider House, garp and owen meany, they started so slow. This book has more consistent (and thus, in a way, better) pacing.
