exposition through dialogue not handled very deftly, especially when we already have interludes from the narrator serving the same purpose. think ‘oh yeah well what about [begin explanation of event]’ ‘yes i remember [event]. wasn’t there [further description of event]?’ ‘exactly. that’s why [more event description both parties should know based on their grasp on reality]’

i really appreciate how thoroughly fleshed out isaac and lin’s characters are within this intricate world building. it’s very difficult to find real people within settings like these (in sci fi they often don’t bother with fleshing out dynamic characters and in fantasy they beat you over the head with every trait they’re trying to assign their characters) and isaac in particular feels so true to pure math.

ive only made it to the dedication: “to all the food lovers out there who’ve ever burned popcorn in the microwave. We’d be too strong if we could cook too.” this does not bode well.

NO WAY mitchell just described yankees women’s curiosity about how southerners treated slaves as “bigoted ignorance”. wild

i find it so difficult to reconcile the willful and hateful ignorance prevalent throughout this book with the progressive views on gender that mitchell clearly has, as well as her compelling narrative and nuanced characters. her understanding that the old south was an “antiquated” feudal system is clear, and it’s so hard to see her not make the logical step that white supremacy is a tool to uphold that system.

This book makes me feel better about not having a sister.

I think have to stop reading “dryly witty” authors altogether because the internalized misogyny of female authors in this subgenre and/or my own is creating a situation in which I consistently dislike their aphoristic female main characters, but not reading female authors specifically is definitely misogynistic.
