“Taylor Johnson’s Lightning Man” reminded me of “Take Only What Belongs to You” from Fruiting Bodies by Kathryn Harlan. I love stories of queer and trans folks finding themselves in the archives!

Really enjoying this so far! It’s contemporary in a way that’s not eye roll inducing, and the writing is good without the prose being too purple.

An absolutely breathtaking collection of poems. The poem “Rifqa” in particular is truly stunning

“In Jerusalem, every footstep is a grave”

“What they see,” his father muttered, “is a poor man trying to serve the Lord. That’s my life.”
“Then I guarantee you,” she said, “that they’re going to do their best to keep it from being their life. You mark my words.”

“Good Spirits” is my favorite story in the collection so far
