This narrator is trying too hard. The pathos in his voice is very annoying to me. You’re a narrator, not a stage actor.

Nothing wrong with this book nor the story. History. I just can’t keep track of the names and dates at the moment. Shelving it.

Starting to regret it. Nathalie is so full of hate, I find it hard to listen to. She also drops her faith rather quickly when faced with hardship.

Fell for the hype. Willingly.

You can call it planting or child making activity but it's still rape when there is no true consent.

What a horrible world Shen Tao has created.

All the women are so... Feminine and flat and dull. They are characters that enhance the men.

Can’t really date this book. The male gaze suggests the 60’s, the female love interest “smiles up” at him and lets him blather on patiently. She has no inner life as yet and talks a lot about her father and grandfather. The AI personalities hark back to the 90’s. I’ll go read the book details.

Any older women reading this?

What?? The London girl now speaks with an American accent? That’s just plain weird. And very distracting.

What the hell did I just buy

It’s becoming very difficult not to quit this book. This is another of those YA books where all the adults are flat and one-dimensional. They are voids, leaving Rose to make every single choice by herself. There are no deep thoughts here and the adults are bobble-heads.

Rose is a self-absorbed, short-sighted girl. Arrogant and insecure at the same time. A perfect 13-year old. I do hope she grows up later in the sorry.

It’s all so grim and miserable. Don’t know if I can finish this.

Does nobody cook in this story?

I rarely listen to Dutch narrators but am enjoying the voice of Phaedra Kwant, such a good fit.

So many little inconsistencies. She wants to kill everyone but couldn’t stand up to 1 guy in her home town. She’s 20 and still “a girl”, after 10 years on the street. Never has any education but speaks to royalty like an equal. Etc etc

I really don’t enjoy listening to young women being beat up and threatened with death. It’s a crappy story line.

Can’t seem to get through the start so this. I don’t care about Adam, I keep missing the point of his ringdoms…. Hanging on my fingernails.
