steinbeck loves dogs

chapter 19 is reminiscent of his book “in dubious battle,” which was released a few years prior to grapes of wrath. basically just talks about labor injustices for the workers flooding to California during the drought. sad stuff

i love this. chapter 10 is wonderful

the town runs the government, not the other way around. how are the people supposed to respond when there’s a shift?

thanks to david price for the beautiful copy of steinbecks most popular works. it might be the most magnificent book on my shelf

chapter 13 made me cry

LIGHT
The film of evening light made the red earth lucent, so that its dimensions were deepened, so that a stone, a post, a building had greater depth and more solidity than in the daytime light; and these objects were curiously more individual And plants were individuals, not the mass of crop; and the ragged willow tree was itself, standing free of all other willow trees. The earth contributed a light to the evening

“From her position as healer, her hands had grown sure and cool and quiet; from her position as arbiter she had become as remote and faultless in judgment as a goddess. She seemed to know that if she swayed the family shook, and if she ever really deeply wavered or despaired the family would fall, the family will to function would be gone.”

He hated his family bc he knew that they were suffering and he was powerless to help them.
So he held toward them an attitude of iron reserve; he lived with them, but behind a wall, a curtain. And toward himself he was even more exacting. He knew that the moment he allowed what his life meant to enter fully into his consciousness, he would either kill himself or someone else. So he denied himself and acted tough.

"Funny thing how it is. If a man owns a little
property, that property is him, it's part of him, and it's like him. If he owns property only so he can walk on it and handle it and be sad when it isn't doing well, and feel fine when the rain falls on it, that property is him, and some way he's bigger because he owns it. Even if he isn't successful he's big with his property. That is so."
