Part 3 feels like it’s 4 pages long how is it actually the size of a novella?

I love reading a discussion in the book thinking: wow I wonder how Steinbeck knew about this thing that the character mentions then open the journal and immediately see him talk about it and asking his editor to find out some extra knowledge. Incredible, really. What a great reading experience. 🥹

Not me thinking hey a fun relaxing read completely forgetting that I know basically NO flower names and having to look up every second word then translate it to German so that I MIGHT learn that name as well.

Drink every time Steinbeck talks about his pencils…

Short break now before we get into this again but I loved the bit where the twins are named. Also I’m really starting to feel endeared with all the Hamiltons.

What a treat that I get to read this alongside the book. It holds such beautiful insights into Steinbeck’s thoughts that go into East of Eden and while I loved him before I am left in awe at his craftsmanship even more knowing the background.

The kids these days, they only want one kind of book and it’s a Hemingway.

Just a random thought but no rich people in banking ever go missing anymore I remember how back in the day they used to be held for ransom every other month almost…

I‘m out here romanticising summercamp because at 32 I think I‘d love to just hang out in the forest for a month or so but then I have to remind myself that as a teenager with zero social skills except anxiety who’d constantly get homesick this would’ve been my worst nightmare :(

Every single time I want to think “Girl, be reasonable for a moment” I instead think “NO this is EXACTLY what being a teenager is like” and I love it sm

Incredible how finally someone manages to write about being a teenager in a way that’s representative of being a teenager

Wow I love Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn if he was my favourite Goaltender Jonathan Quick of the New York Rangers (sorry Darcy Kuemper you are my favourite overall player but not my favourite goalie I’m sure someone will get what I mean by this) if he had one of my other guy’s Harvard degree if he was me if I was incredibly rich and living in NYC.
