Emmeline gets shaken out of her solitary life with her father on an island, where they lived together, classifying smells, until her father dies. She's brought back to the mainland and finds out her father had been hiding so much from her. She is an outcast at school and gains only one friend. But his family is difficult. He has an abusive father and a submissive mother. Finally, he takes off. She follows. Great.
