It’s starting off very similar to Wuthering Heights in my opinion. There’s a visitor observing the domestic life of a household.

It’s already very good, with the most amazing characterization.

This book gets my heart rate going more than any Jane Austen novel I have read before. I audibly gasp everytime the Thorpes do something to Catherine. It feels like a soap opera and I am so here for it.

Hilarious. Brilliant. Classic.

I wish I had read this book in high school because I had many similar experiences and emotions as Catherine in this book. The part where John won’t shut up about his carriage and horse showed me that men don’t change, today they just brag about their cars.

It’s a great book, but I can’t seem to get over the descriptions of the women we have encountered. It’s very misogynistic. I can’t say I’m surprised, but it seems to be a deeper theme running through the novel and especially in the hatred for Nurse Ratched.

Even though this is set in a mental hospital and not in the future, it gives off the same message and story arch as 1989 and other dystopian novels. It is also interesting that the narrator is unreliable, but seems very perceptive, so it makes the book feel unreal yet so much closer to reality than if he were a reliable narrator.

Fantastic, I love how Wharton always builds up the tragedy and romance so that by the middle of the book you cannot put it down.

Not as amazing as The House of Mirth, but fantastic nonetheless. Edith Wharton does a great job of characterization and setting the scene so that the reader can step into and criticize New York society in the 1890’s.
