I think there are probably many interpretations of this book. What i understood is that the character is not a human being so he strives to posess human characteristics like their scent, but no just any scent, he wants to create and posess the most perfect of them all.
The plot for me is too intensely disturbing but, the author did great in describing the 1700 Paris, i could almost smell it throughout the book!
