the whole tangent on feminism and military relationships was so random but really interesting from the author’s perspective. i actually agreed with a good bit of it

the writing is so well done and comedic. also tale as old as time, soldier falls in love with a stripper pre deployment lmao. but awww they pinky swore! walton is reminding me so much of my bf who’s also in the army infantry lol they act basically exactly the same. replace me with the stripper and we’ve got basically the same story.

i cannot stress enough how much i dislike everything about this book. i know i’m not the target audience cause i’m not a fantasy reader but not only is the MC boring and totally dull, but the plot has zero substance???? idk why this book is so loved as it is honestly. also it’s unnecessarily long.

my favorite part is when ray gets introspective “i had to go to war, i wasn’t made to waste my time tangled up in the grass.” some people are truly just built like that. even after getting injured, he refused to go home and went back to his platoon. i understand it, and yet i also find it simultaneously stupid.

really well written so far but i’m not surprise cause it’s jake tapper and he’s a capital J journalist. i just wasn’t sure he actually had writing abilities cause he’s an anchor not a writer.

god this is so sad. i can’t imagine knowing your best friend’s husband is dead before she does and having to wait for her to find out.

i know you don’t have time to dwell on it in the moment but this is one of the most emotionally callous war memoirs i’ve read. deaths are stated so matter of factly. it’s jarring after reading so many emotional humanistic accounts of war.

i know this book is called ‘red platoon’ but it is really just about red platoon. it doesn’t really tell me much about clinton. it tells you What they do, but not why. it’s not interesting. there’s no urgency, no stakes, no real narrative here. no criticism, no anti-war sentiment. this is a “Real War Story” something a recruiter would make you read.
