he says victorians did not give a shit and dehumanised those in poverty, he quotes readings on sexual violence, he will recognise the fact that the police and media wanted jack to be jewish and put women in danger because of it. And then- annie chapman couldn't have been planned because who would wank over her- this woman has been killed over and over and he calls her too ugly to be worth anything else. Annoyed

I could have so much love for this book, I was so excited when I started. He calls out ripperologists for their idolisation of this guy who wasn't all that mysterious. he makes sure you are aware that the police covered up a lot. What is putting me off is how he can recognise how masturbatory and revisionist these investigators are and then be masturbatory and revisionist about the victims okay runningoutofspaceholdo

He's shitting on my girl Carol clover a bit but I prefer it to Going to pieces because he's justifying slashers with their history rather than trying to cover bits of it up to make it seem cartoony and harmless

This isn't a book you sob to atm but it's really sweet and grounded even though it's basically a ghost story. Blams a very mediocre man so yeah its about surviving Nazis but it isn't heroic, so far its about how his surviving is just as incidental as the death of everyone he knew, and coming to terms with that loneliness and guilt and memory. I really like it, its not fast or massively heavy but it hits you

I can see why its controversial- it's judgemental on purpose, but it does have its moments of real optimism and creativity when Achebe shows every issue he sees in his own society. It's also weirdly accessible for a book from the 70's, and I think its mostly because the discourse of post-colonial africa and corruption hasn't changed too much since.

Only managing to read on the bus now cos my attention span is so shot but oh maaaaaannn-
Started talking about how the mad scientist making a baby in a lab and the pregnancy horror are both about control and responsibility and GUILT
I do have beef with the liberal use of the r slur throughout though :(

Finally actually made some progress with this, (so far covered birth, family, nature and science) but still reads like it's exploratory and fully develops the ideas from each film mentioned. My favourite theory so far is that a big part of the 'guilt trip' that horror films aim for is to warn us about unconditional love (if you clone your dead kid and love the killer kid that comes back did you really love your kid☹️

Just starting but I reeeally like this one- all about how the point of horror is making the viewer see themselves where they don't want to, not scaring them, and that killer kids are a good way to make us feel guilty for identifying/sympathising with predators, (as payback for us not being guilty for our predation in real life)
