Reading this for book club. I would not have chosen it as I HATE WWII books but I’m trying to keep an open mind. Lawthon is a good writer and the sections about her young single life are entertaining.
I’m alternating reading the book and listening to the audiobook because the book is SO LONG. But I just listened to a really brutal scene and I am considering if I want to read any more of this.

After a slow start I am finding the book very interesting. Tyll is a Forrest Gump presence in various events during the thirty years war getting the perspectives of different historical and fictional characters. In the 'Kings in Winter' section two couples share very different reports of the same event. Just like married people I know. LOL.

Skipping around sections for the pieces most relevant to me now. This and the companion book are excellent resources for narrative nonfiction writers.

Diane is starting The Thirty Years War: A Sourcebook
A remarkable reference book, just as the title says- a sourcebook of documents written by individuals involved and affected by the thirty years war. Picking out the bits about Transylvania’s part in the war for the book I plan to start this fall.

A new series from the prolific and entertaining author Anne Perry. Takes place in 1933 outside London and along the Amalfi coast. So intrigue. Romance?
I am already reading a big stack of books, some more intellectually and/or emotionally challenging but this ebook became available through the library so I had to take it for light bedtime reading.

Intriguing. Takes place in Tanzania. Not a place I have been before. South African reporter meets beautiful mysterious photojournalist. Don’t know where it’s going but I’ll stick around for a while.

Jessica is such a sweet, loving, cheerful girl, keeping a positive outlook despite her devastating disease.
But the abusive treatment from her doctors in the last chapter I read made me put the book aside for a while.

Rereading this book before I get started on the next book in the series, I am reminded how much I enjoyed all the monstrous women!
