Can't wait to finally meet this whale!

I'm actually listening to the audio book, so I'm not sure what page I'm on. It's a pretty mixed bag. Gilbert is at her best as an intimate story-teller, as when she recounts the stories of her grandmother, mother and friends. The sections that cover the history of marriage as a legal institution, statistics about marriage, or modernity's effect on marriage are dry, monotonous and not exactly news.

Finally realized that reading 75 pages a week for a book group felt like ripping a bandaid off slowly. The book has picked up tremendously, and I'm particularly taken with the passages about AA and recovery from addiction.

I am repeating "it takes a while to get into a novel this long" as necessary. My impression so far: occasionally funny, occasionally deep, with a ton of rambling that gets boring. Kind of like sitting next to someone talkative on the #1 bus.
