Much of this I've heard in other books and blogs on similar subjects but it is arranged well and message that needs reminding of as often as possible nowadays.

While he isn't a kind and particularly generous man, Moran certainly feels true to life. Some guys are like that in their homes. Very solid writing. The kind I like where not a ton of plot really has to happen. Just great descriptions of characters and their interactions. McGahern is very readable. Believe a clip of the actor Cillian Murphy recommending him got me to check it out.

This is gonna be heavy! But these kinds of books often refresh me still. To know others feel the weight of man's ingenuity, of course toward the good but as well to evil. We construct culture in an attempt to transcend death, to leave a mark but not all marks are pleasant. Some are scars. I had to jump towards the end after the introduction just to reassure myself it is only pessimism and not cynicism professed here.

So far it's only the horror of modern economic destruction of land and abuse of money but its good writing and I suppose the monster or whatever is the traditional horror aspect will mirror the dickhead rich land stealers.

Reminds me of when I listened to The Age of Surveillance Capitalism. I basically agree with much of the premise and its a little bit difficult and depressing to know the whole truth of it. I can do a bit more with this info than that one. We have more choice to use social media less than to use most the internet and modern technologies. Overall well researched and structured though.

I really liked the first half but the last 100 pages was most the characters being scum bags. Not enough redeeming qualities to be really interesting. I suppose you do find that nihilistic crude crowd within existentialism but they certainly aren't my favorite.

Enjoying this one so far. Curious to see where the 4 or 5 main characters end up.

That's some damn fine writing. Finally got some bookshelves on their way so I brought my book storage crates (all five of them) from out the garage. This is an excellent choice for a read of my many unread books. Note to self: no need to buy books for a year or three. (That will stop me with no greater force than it has until now).

Some great stuff in-between a few stinkers. Occasionally corny. But the exposure to some new gritty writers is more than worth it.

This must be my third read through or listen through of a version of this book. It is really entertaining. A piece I come back to remembering little besides the fact I enjoy it. It is the seminal road book. Feels like going on the journey yourself. Great for an audiobook in the car.

Only King could make this situation into a 14 hour audiobook. And most of it relatively entertaining. As often, a few scenes will drag. But he describes life in such color, it really is like a movie in your head.

While this certainly won't be my favorite book read or listened to this year there have been some great chapters interspersed so far. The audiobook is done well. Been listening in the morning to a chapter or two upon waking. Sci fi always seems to really grab me or fail to do so at all. This book does both. Looking forward to wrapping it up. Hopefully strong.
