“And if this was truth, hadn’t it been an act of daily grace, on Ned’s part, to make Furlong believe that he had come from finer stock, while watching steadfastly over him, through the years. This was the man who had polished his shoes and tied the laces, who’d bought him his first razor and taught him how to shave. Why were the things that were closest so often the hardest to see?” 😭😭😭

Something in Furlong’s heart caught and turned over when the headlights crossed the rooks and the nests they’d built and he saw the house freshly painted, with electric lights burning in all the front rooms, and the Christmas tree on display in the drawing room window, where it never used to be.

A part of him wished it was a Monday morning, that he could just put his head down and drive on out the roads and lose himself in the mechanics of the ordinary, working week. Sundays could feel very threadbare, and raw.

When he reached the yard gate and found the padlock seized with frost, he felt the strain of being alive and wished he had stayed in bed, but he made himself carry on and crossed to a neighbour’s house, whose light was on.

The longing to stay, to reach out and touch her was deep, but he took his shirt and trousers from the chair and dressed in the dark, without her waking.

What was it all for? Furlong wondered. The work and the constant worry. Getting up in the dark and going to the yard, making the deliveries, the whole day long, then coming home in the dark and trying to wash the black off himself and sitting into a dinner at the table and falling asleep before waking in the dark to meet a version of the same thing … Might things never change or develop into something else, or new?

essentialism - plant and animal species stayed unchanged throughout time. around 1800s lamarck developed idea of 'transmutation' - traits acquired by a creature during its lifetime could be inherited by its offspring. darwin, developing his theory of evolution would reject many of lamarck's ideas, "but both men shared the belief that complex life evolved over an immense period of time.”

“What we need to realise is that these challenges are not natural, nor are they God-given; they have developed over time” - most effects not because of CC per se but poor management exacerbating effects for diff communities (some more than others = point of the book so far)
