“We are a country founded on religious principles of forgiveness and turning the other cheek, yet every piece of infrastructure is set up to remind you of and hold you accountable for your past mistakes. Your arrest record, your credit score, your driving history, your rental history - are all just measurements of morality that people use to establish a trust matrix about you.”

“That day was the first day I ever truly felt that forgiveness was possible or even a real thing. It was the first day that gave me hope that my life wouldn’t just be the sum of my mistakes.”

I know this book was written to impart life lessons that he’s learned on his son. But also it is life lessons for adults who still need grace. Adults who, as children, were not given the skills or the time to process the things that were happening to them or around them…and the heavy bags that are packed with the past that they still carry today. This book is triggering in a wonderfully healing way.

This book is so wonderfully good. It’s like eating a warm biscuit while you wait for the rest of dinner to finish cooking. You can just smell the goodness you know it’s coming and you know it’s not going to disappoint because your mother knows how to cook.

I found this book in a Tokyo airport gift shop. They turned the lights off on the plane so I didn’t get very far. But the author came out swinging and I knew this book was going to be a delight. It is not disappointing me. Her words are like thick blankets that warm the bones and keep you safe from “the outside”.
