As a mood reader, I've been waiting for the right time to read this. Its quite good so far, I appreciate how the author leans heavily into a particular indigenous culture for her FMC, and makes the colonizers broadly white (Ive noted Scandinavian, German, English and others in the general 'Anglish' people

Progress after wait 1, and flight 1

Its starting to pick up around 1/3 of the way in, it truly starts hitting its stride with pacing and intrigue. I appreciate the multiple POVs introduced, and find them to all add interesting details to the story so far

I get about 30 pages every time i listen to this in the car (20 mins to drive to work) so its slooooow progress okay.

Love the who-done-it going on, but the American military propaganda, Russophobia, and weird anti marijuana stuff is.. less fun. Like at least make the drug smugglers, smuggle cocaine? That level of vitriol for weed is not realistic.

Love the fact this is set in the ADK. Its viscerally familiar in its setting (and as an ex camp counselor, certain storylines are familiar as well)

Argylle is interesting but his parents needed to be worse people than weed drug smugglers. Sooo much energy towards that, just for weed? at least cocaine makes the vitriol understandable.

Sapphic Vampires? Industrial era? Gothic vibes? sure why not

I think I like this book but dont ask me anything about it lol. Audiobooks are probably not for me im finding out

Though not marketed as having major christian themes, this book certainly does. The author doesn't seem willing to make societal commentary on the controversial subjects that he introduces (child marriage, christianity). Our main character, Mariamma, seems to take on the role of wife and mother (at the age of 12) with a shrug. Not to mention the child grooming esq vibes with her husband. I dont DNF often but I might.

Radical acts of kindness. The Japanese Internment Camps are something taught in vagaries, glanced over in school. We never dive into JUST how horrific they truly were for our fellow Americans. Herbert Nicholson exemplifies the human condition by going above and beyond for those unlawfully detained (even at great risk to himself), even in horrific situations, people can be simply kind.

I dont do audiobooks really... sos trying to listen to this as an audiobook (wish me luck. and patience)

Definitely a book to read slowly. A lot to take in, Interspersing this read with gentler books. A phenomenal critique on western imperialism, truly.

"As always, the dead will be made to pay the moral debt born of their killing." This will be a book, that will undoubtedly stick with me.

All three women are so deeply complex. I feel such a well of connection to Cassandra despite, I feel, her lack of page time. Elektra herself is a deeply troubled girl with such a warped sense of self, yet it is understandable given her circumstances and the time period she exists in. Clytemnestra is interesting I suppose? Shes got bad taste in men for sure

I loved the OG trilogy (even if I was 10 years late to the party...), and im continuing the HG momentum with the prequel. I cant wait to see what societal commentary ms collins has in store for this one😤

Ill pick up books I think seem interesting, with a VERY vague notion of what the actual premise of the book is. Absolutely rawdogging my reads, pure vibes only, methinks. I think I expected something far different from this, but so far im not mad at the general ambiance and story so far🤷🏻
Sometimes no expectations is the best way to read🫣

So far, better than book 2, the fantasy elements feel more fleshed out, theres a bit more world building

listen, im lowkey in a slump but this book is interesting and has some unique themes it's touching on so far so... vibes

The end of this chapter, discussing Denises impact (her work with Dalí, to the reporter) and the way this book continually emphasized the insignificance of 'The Defendant' is so brilliant.
