The mode of life and hunting is pretty enthralling, especially because I thought those would be the most boring aspects. The melting of the bullets and cooling of the gun between shots, the wisdom about cold or the movement of buffalo. Really makes you think about how much knowledge was lost from indigenous people about that land, how much was contained in daily habits.

Giving this one another chance with the audiobook...

"Mother mary has no need of worldy admiration, any more than Abraham need of tears, for she was not a heroine and he was not a hero, but both of them became greater, not because they were exempt from distress and torment and paradox, but they became great through these."

"[The knight] is not cowardly, he is not afraid of letting love creep into his most secret, his most hidden thoughts, to let it twine in innumerable coils about every ligament of his conciousness--if the love becomes an unhappy love, he will never be able to tear himself loose from it. He feels a blissful ruptrue in letting love tingle through every nerve...for this instant is life and death"

Egyptology being a thing in the islamic golden age is so cool. Do you think they would also have people selling fake egyptian "artifacts" that are wildly inaccurate but inspire some sort of idea of a great and ancient period of time for humanity?

This is actually so captivating so far, also I love unapolagetically violent political action.

"...so maybe that wasn't why we were so quiet after all... Mostly it was the closeness. It made my throat ache, wanting to speak of it."

"She laughed as if what I'd just said was so clever that it had somehow made her bubble over with joy. That phone call was the best thing that had
happened all day, and for a while after I'd hung up, the situation at
school didn't seem nearly so bad any more."
