Cautiously optimistic about this solely because it’s not written by or voiced by Andrew Robinson (Garak’s actor—he wrote the first book about garak, ‘a stitch in time’ which I recommend for anyone who watched DS9)

The vibes ARE good so far

I am adding this to my goodreads and even though the app will count it as my 45th book for the year, I will not count it as such because it’s only ~50 pages. So no celebrating reaching my year’s goal *yet*

I think the concept of phage therapy is sound—we have not come up with a new class of antibiotics since 1984. Bacteriophages have been evolving with the bacteria they prey on for millions of years. They can be fine tuned to target specific strains of bacteria and would (theoretically) slow down the literal tons of antibiotics being dumped into our waters and earth

I miss the good ole days where clinical trials looked like doctors (d’Hérelle—never actually went to med school) going “alright so I have this treatment idea for the 12 year old child, and to prove it is safe, I will give myself 100x the dose I would give the small child. And THEN, when I don’t die, I’ll give the small child the dose”

you know its going to be good when Ed Yong (writer of “I contain multitudes” and “An Immense World”) is mentioned

Scientists in sci-fi 99% of the time: alright time to crack down on how to translate this alien language to communicate with them

Main characters in this book after listening to the aliens speak for two minutes: yeah we’re not going to bother trying to translate *that*

This is precisely the type of whimsical dark sci fi I’ve been missing omg

man i hate when safety protocols and safety measures make it take longer/cost more to find a way to exploit resources from alien planets smh

Last book I read by this author was the seven husbands and evelyn hugo and I am reading this fingers crossed we get lesbian lovers here too. I am being reminded why I enjoyed her writing in the first place
