Swimming, One Day in August

It is time now, I said, for the deepening and quieting of the spirit among the flux of happenings. Something had pestered me so much I thought my heart would break. I mean, the mechanical part. I went down in the afternoon to the sea which held me, until I grew easy. About tomorrow, who knows anything. Except that it will be time, again, for the deepening and quieting of the spirit.

I love this book and I want to read more like it, but GD this dude is horny, the cover butt should have given me an inkling. I hope there is less sex in his later years but at this rate I doubt it.

I want to keep reading this because I am enjoying it, but I have so many books from the library I need to read first, woe is me.

IT IS A SERIOUS THING TO BE ALIVE ON THIS FRESH MORNING IN THIS BROKEN WORLD

Favourite poems so far;
Night and the River
Straight Talk from Fox
Invitation (of course)
Summer Morning

And, this quote from 'The Teachers'

Owl in the black morning,
mockingbird in the burning
slants of the sunny afternoon
declare so simply to the world
everything I have tried but still
haven’t been able to put into words

I hate when books say, 'That's something a character in a movie would say/do! And this isn't a movie, it's real life!' this book does that SOOOOO many timessssss. Also, how many times will you mention this woman has a messy bunnnnnn!!!! Also, I never want to read another book set in Hollywood or New York again, the world is too big.

The aspect I do like is the intensity of the friendship b/w Amanda and Annie.

I was reading this at a café, and the woman next to me said, Jenny Slate! I grew up with her. Pretty neat since her first book is one of my all-time favourites.

Getting back into it at the perfect time. I will be writing down a lot of her lines in my journal. Such as, 'There are no tigers here, I tell myself. Today is big enough to contain everything, and I am safe and it is good to be alive." I have to read slowly, to absorb it all.

Humourous and feel-good, but also straight-up! I love the simple, small moments she shares from her long life. And I liked when she recalled a time in her past..."I was just forty". Just! Forty! Forty is young to her! That is incredible, and I can't wait to one day (hopefully) be 'just' forty.
