Johnny Bear - a slow man who is able to mimic everything he hears causes trouble by eavesdropping on two wealthy women. Too much going on here. 2/5

The murder - another one that hasn't aged well... some wives apparently need to be beaten. Hypocrisy all around here, but the writing was good. 2.5/5

The raid- classic great Steinbeck characters, this time two socialists try to get their message to people but realize a violent mob are headed their way 4.5/5
The harness- a man decides to do the things he wants to after his wife dies, but ends up learning she's still with him. 3/5.
The vigilante- tells the story of a man's come down from the high of attending a lynching. Yeeks this has not aged well. 1/5

The Snake - Doc from Cannery Row is visited by a woman who wants to buy a rat and a snake just so she can watch the snake eat the rat. 4.5/5

Breakfast - a very short 1st person narrative about having breakfast with some cotton pickers. 2.5/5

Chrysanthemums - a capable woman meets a salesman who guilts her into hiring him to repair some pots. 4/5

White quail - a woman plots her dream garden as a child, marries, and manes it happen. Becomes obsessed with birds and threat of cat, which husband tries to take care of. 4/5

Flight - a lazy 19 year old kills a man after being insulted, his mother sends him fleeing and he's pursued afterwards. 3/5
