I am really appreciative of Kuang’s ability to humanities depravity while still maintaining the reader’s investment in a “positive” outcome. I think this series may have turned me into a lifelong fan of Kuang’s work.

It’s amazing how much the opening chapters float old memories to the top. I was 11 when Katrina hit. The way the author is setting the stage of the city prior, offers an adult perspective I never had the capacity to understand at the time.
