We can see the life and struggles of Simon throughout the book, like when Simon has friend issues: "I guess that it's not a huge surprise that Leah's pissed about last Friday" (Albertelli 254).

Tacit codes can cause people to perceive others as different, weird or weak: “No one has slid any homophobic nots into the slates of my locker, which is good” Albertalli 187).

I can see a part of myself in Simon. In a way I have kind of experienced being outed, of course not to the same degree as him but I can sympathize with him and his experience

Tacit codes can make people feel like outsiders if they don’t follow the rules. Simon talks about how sometimes he feels like an outsider and different: “It feels like I’m on the outside somehow” (Albertalli 101).

I found it interesting that there are many LGBTQ people that are homeless: "Almost one-third of LGBTQ+ people between the age of 13 and 24 dealt with homelessness or housing instability during their lives" (Fischer). I knew that being gay/trans can affect people's living situations but I didn't realize the number was so high. It is interesting though because Simon states that his family most likely will support him.

To be honest I’m not really a big fan of Simon. To me he just seems like a jerk. As a fellow LGBTQ member some of the stuff I can relate to, but other things not so much. To me it seems like he likes to make mountains out of mole hills when it comes to his problems, he thinks he’s more special than everyone else and that nobody has the same problems as him (which just isn’t true).

In the book Simon says something that I don’t agree with and really throws me off: “ I guess there are a few lesbian and bisexual girls, but I think it’s different for girls. Maybe it’s easier” (Albertalli 21). I didn’t really like how he said this and seems to just assume that it’s easier for wlw associating people. There are different struggles between mlm and wlw that make being it hard enough.
