my first audiobook and 3 hours in i have realised spotify has been playing it which the FUCKING CHAPTERS SHUFFLED why is that even a feature. i’m never doing an audiobook ever again. and there i was feeling impressed by the lack of chronology and no exposition on who the characters are. FML

perchance the best so far. he’s learning to pick up the pace

In my “books with cleverly-made-up words” era. The author consistently shows instead of tells and relies on you being well-read and a lover of the english language. Topolganger?? Are u kidding me?? LOVING IT

Already fighting for my life, second attempt. Having the same experience as LOTR where (controversial) sometimes a great writer is not necessarily a great storyteller, or maybe I am just dumb. Get ready to see this on my shelf for a very long time - but at least this time I’ve found the bloody glossary at the back!!

I can see that this isn’t going to be a book for everyone because it’s hefty and not massively gripping, but I’m really enjoying just wandering around with this character. Hollinghurst is a fantastic writer and has a wonderful ability to capture how nuanced and rarely singular emotions are - characters are always “pleased and a little bored” or “polite and rather grim-faced”. I love it

Thoroughly enjoying how well this book subtly keeps secrets from you through a first person author. Not easy to do without being heavy handed or irritated but so far I’m obsessed, highlighting a lot and have a feeling it will make me cry at around 40%

MODERN books with an introduction from another author just totally glazing it to get you hyped before youve even begun……. highlighting the themes you’ll encounter without giving anything away…… drawing on comparative literature…… classifying it as postcolonial fiction…… situating it in the political environment of its pub year……., hnnnnn………

What do u mean the electric district called their children COIL and LECT and AMPERT!! the fish district called their child URCHIN. WHAT do u MEAN the transport district called their child VELO and MILES. and then after all this we just get RYAN FROM DISTRICT 9 suzanne PLEASE

I Am Doing My Best But This Book Is Genuinely Hard

This book will drop THEE most insane lore in a sentence and then immediately move on. “and then she died. meanwhile,” “so he married a 12 year old, who then got pregnant” I am mentally unprepared for this

Tried to read this once before and found it tiring. Went in again with the stubborn belief that while every friend has rated it 4+, I would find it cliche and entitled. Alas I am experiencing The Joys Of Reading and am having a fantastic time!

Pleasantly surprised - having been worried about the romcom vibe the book started off with. This is definitely one for Sally Rooney fans, naturally has a Little Women aspect to it, but above all reads a LOT like Demon Copperhead. For now I would recommend !!

I think my issue so far is that I just don’t get her motivations. She’s in a job that makes her absolutely depressed and miserable and spends so much time being miserable, which is something I could never imagine doing - life is too short? Most likely a me problem but this book wouldn’t exist if she just. Didn’t work there
