I picked it as a quick read for the weekend but it's the kind of book you never want to end 🥺

I heard so many great things about it I'm not gonna drop it just yet because I'm curious but it leans so heavily into a chosen one territory and there's already two different magic types the main character will be able to wield, appearing and being explained very shortly one after another. That's a lot of exposition and info dumping on page. Plus the main character is so annoying

I really enjoyed the first half but now the disappointment is slowly seeping in...

Re-reading it for a bookclub and somehow I enjoy it way more than last time. I also find Alice less annoying than before, but maybe because she's set in my mind as a delusional character I'm not going to like anyways so this time around I'm just rolling with it

I think it's the first romance I've read where so much emphasis is put on the attitude with which main characters approach their feelings and possible relationship, and how much they are trying to communicate properly. I genuinely don't know why often it's so difficult for romance authors to realize when their characters are adults they should communicate like adults.

Continuing to have my mind blown away by this book. Pulitzer or not, I'm a fan of this narration style and form

This is SO MUCH FUN so far, makes me want to pick up Dungeon Crawler Carl right after!

It's kind of embarrassing how painfully obvious are the Christian allegories in this one. Jill's entire first conversation with Aslan is about her coming to God to acknowledge her sin and guilt, not being able to turn away from it anymore and therefore she has to embark on a difficult journey of repentance and penance. C. S. Lewis really abandoned all subtlety.

I'm kind of invested in it but
1) the writing quality is questionable
2) the pov from two years ago is already taking over the entire narrative, I wish I saw the characters in current timeline instead of relying on their backstory
3) I'm afraid the entire "will they won't they" situation is based on the main character constantly reminding the mmc that they are friends and only friends, and it's lame for ~35 yo

The nostalgia is hitting so hard in this one. I've been delaying reading it so it lasts longer 🥹 perfect bedtime read too

I swear Hastings is like Brock from Pokemon, every young lady he sees is possibly the love of his life

I am struggling 😮‍💨Somehow getting through 965 pages of this series so far did not convince me to care about these characters and while my opinion was mostly positive in book one and two, in this one every time Darrow opens his mouth I wish he'd just shut up. I'm not a quitter but it's difficult to pick up this book

I have some major complaints as always but I'm so invested in this story??? It's really a decent debut so far

The way some contemporary romances are written get on my nerves, it's like they're not even trying anymore. Not every book needs a beautiful prose and not every author is capable of writing that well, and that's okay. However I hate that it feels like it was written in one afternoon and using such basic language it could have been a conversation between teenagers, not a book that is supposed to make me feel things

it works SO MUCH better as an audiobook, thank god

I expected unholy amount of smut in this but not in the first 40 pages???

This is so painfully Twilight 2.0 I'm fully expecting "This is a skin of a killer, Bella" scene

I'll be continuing but quite honestly it lacks the same soul that The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches had. It feels like the author wanted to recreate the same kind of story with the same themes but slightly different set of characters since it was received so well the last time but failed somewhere in the middle

I'm afraid the gargoyle is stealing the show 🤣 the beginning was really atmospheric and I was immediately drawn in but the story is falling apart as I read more

I know King's take on popculture references (& anything that's deeply rooted in our reality, including covid tbh) in his books, he made it loud and clear by now, but dear god it's a lot to get through sometimes 😮‍💨 after reading "Holly" this one is somehow even worse in that department
