London Summers is 10% done with Goblin Gigs (Dungeon Dasher Book 1)
Trying to make it until the Fantasy starts... honestly the audio book readers might be a big part of what is making this such a hard listen. The main voice is very authorative, typical cocky young fantasy protaganist, but hearing him whine about not understanding a girl is into him and watching movies is just not a good fit. Speaking of the girl, the voice just does not fit a human 18 year old... 0 out of 5.

Okay... chapter 1 done ... this might be a DNF... it is either much better once it switches to fantasy or it has only been reviwed by folks who emjoy this genre... so far I rate it: 12 cringes out of 5 stars.

I'm only 13 pages in, and already I can tell this is going to be a slog... In just the intro of chapter one I can tell that the author will likely cherry pick studies they agree with, and this book will be lacking in represention of LGBTQ+ people. I do believe the text will eventually get there, but when it does it will likely not do a very good job.

I forget how dense Gibson can be. Im looking forward to seeing where this book goes, especially since it hasn't gone cyberpunk action story so far.

I am surprised how much I am enjoying this book. It is very YA, and very much full of tropes. But unlike other books in the genre the world building and writing make enough sense I sticking with it.

I do wish the sword fighting made sense... it is close enough to accurate to make me mad that it isn't accurate, rather then just pass it by.

I wish this was written as alternate history of the Japanese conquest of China during world war 2.
A how do the Chinese fight against an imperialist Japan with magic robots.

It seems like that was the inspiration, with all the nods to Chinese language and art, (the word for 4 sounds like death for example).

All the talk of fantasy nations sort of takes away from what could have been quite cool asian. steampunk.

Sigh... so I knew that this book was going to be dated... having it read to me as a kid, I know ai wouldn't remember everything.

But there is literally no need for the amount of sexism in this story.

The narrative or worried mother is one thing... but the father explaining it away as "women are just different" and the narrators approach to his sisters is just sort of gross, and isn't really relevant to the story.

Not going to lie, I'm reading this because my book club choose it. So far the only enjoyment im getting out of the book is complaining about just how bad it is.

The plot is so contrived that I dont believe anything that is told to me, because if its true it would be dumb.

The protagonist is the worst type of Mary Sue, she is absurdly good at everything but is constantly worried because oh no she isnt good enough.
