17 year old girl, by herself around midnight— initiates conversation with a 30 year old strange man. Interesting. He describes her beauty as leaving a lasting impression. Interesting.

The book that fostered my love for literature. It’s not the most complex who-done-it nor is it a compelling love story. ‘The Owls Have Come To Take Us Away’ by Ronald L Smith is a book I picked up in the 5th grade. A book that introduced me to unreliable narrators — a trope that I’ve grown to love. A mixture of alien sci-fi, conspiracy theories, a not-so-shocking plot twist, and of course nostalgia.

In the first volume of the story Han Kang portrays what it is like to go against the status quo and the judgment and isolation that follows. As a vegetarian… it does get annoying being pestered about diet and my reasoning for cutting out meat especially as someone without an excuse like allergies or illness. This is definitely an extreme case and portrays patriarchal effects and how woman are stripped of autonomy.
