I’ll give the author credit: they really tried to make this its own world. In doing so, however, it’s chock-full of info dumping that screams “SEE! This isn’t Harry Potter!” Every other chapter is just Helena reminiscing her days at not-Hogwarts and the death of not-Harry Potter, while fearing the terrible brilliance of not-Voldemort.

It’s entertaining, though.

What stands out to me is the sheer amount of info dumping. I’m not saying it’s because the book is fanfiction and can no longer rely on prior knowledge, but I am saying it’s somewhat boring thus far. A lot of time is spent trying to make me care about Luc, but I don’t know enough about him to care that he’s dead. Maybe I’d care if he was, say, Harry Potter, but he’s not (allegedly).

Getting a little cartoonishly villainous in the last 20%, but Joe Hill has me STRESSED, so I suppose I’ll let it slide. Mostly.

I’ve had several students ask my opinions on publishing fanfiction for profit. I figure I should read the one that started it all before contributing to those conversations. Trying to go into this with an open mind.

Man, this is wild. I’m having a fantastic time.
