I spent today’s session of reading this book mainly in the footnotes learning about a minor character’s acting career. I read about movies for many several pages in shocking detail down to the mm it was filmed in. Will i ever need to know that information for the rest of the book? I doubt it. Was it enjoyable reading those pages? No.

How do you read a whale? One page at a time.

I am naturally skeptical of modern novels, for better or worse, but this book has been a pleasant surprise. It reminds me of Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding in that it merges an entertaining concept, video game development, with a literary attempt at characterizing its world, concepts, and themes. I thought it would be hokey, and some of the dialogue is, for sure, but so far I can’t stop myself from liking it.
