Nasra is on page 55 of 180 of The Art of Loving
I’ve paused on the part regarding self-love. I just feel Fromm is going to destroy whatever understanding of it I previously had. He’s perfectly put into words a lot of my floating thoughts. What a mind.

This is not a book I can just speed read. It’s more of an academic text. It’s well written to the point that I genuinely feel Fromm is speaking to me, the individual.

My first impression is that the book is very well written. Also, judging from what I’ve read so far, it has the potential to be a 21st century classic dystopian novel.

So far, I’ve only read the intro, the preface and the first chapter—I’m beyond hooked. Fromm’s first language isn’t English yet his mastery of English writing is adjacent to poetry. I’m entranced.

I don’t think this book has many chapters. I don’t really feel like it needs to. Every other paragraph introduces a new train of thought or builds off of a random one. It’s keeping me interested.

This is the best book of poetry I’ve read up until this point in my life. Highly recommend.

I’ve read so much poetry this year and the overwhelming majority has disappointed me. Rumi, however, has beyond exceeded my expectations. No wonder he has such a timeless influence and is such a household name in the East.

I’m charmed by how well the author is able to describe common emotional experiences so clearly. I’m not even the main character and I feel so understood, so human.

These poems are heavily nature-themed. I’m not sure how I feel about the repetitive theme throughout the book.

I thought I would like how “confusing” this book is. I’m just annoyed by it at this point.

I just finished chapter 2. The book is slow moving. This makes me think we are, at some point, approaching a plot climax. I hope it’ll be interesting as I don’t really understand the objective of this book right now.

This book is like a coming-of-age story. I understand why it was made into a movie. Am I enjoying the pace, the characters and the plot? Yes, however, I would not read this book again or seek out a similar book.

This book is not extraordinary but it is really sweet so far. I feel the author is building up to something very interesting in the plot line. I hope I’m right.

We’ve been learning about the different types of envy for the last few weeks or so. There are a few chapters/pages that I missed and have to read but this literature circle has been very nourishing for my soul. May Allah reward my sisters and the entire Masjid.

Currently on Don’t Apologize for What You’ve Done. I’m not entirely clear on the subject. The Stranger’s Bed was about love, perhaps love of country or romantic love or both. A State of Siege is clearly about the Palestine under occupation. However, this third book is unclear to me still. Maybe it’s left up to interpretation more than the other books?

I finished A State of Siege. I thought it was incredible, period. Also, it must’ve been incredibly painful to write and written works such as these come from incredibly difficult lived experiences. May Allah have mercy on Mahmoud Darwish.
